There is a withholding tax on dividends from Canadian income trusts.  If they are held in a US tax exempt entity like an IRA or pension plan, is there a way to get a refund on those withholding or is there no similar concept to a tax exempt entity in Canada (the withholding tax is an amount about equal to a fully taxable income stream).

I have never thought that there was a way to recover foregin taxes withheld on dividends paid to an IRA but on the Ed Slott forum (www.irahelp.com) someone indicated that it was possible.

That thread was posted a long time ago but the forum may be searchable in some way.
