If an irrevocable trust provides that the trust shall pay death taxes imposed on the estate of the grantor, does that provision cause the assets of the trust to be included in the grantor's taxable estate?

I guess the first question is whether some or all of the initial funding was treated as a completed gift for gift tax purposes. Did the grantor have an opinion of the probability that a partial or full reversion would occur? (In a gift tax return, perhaps.....) Or do you think this was a drafting error?
