I've just gotten back into preparation of court accountings after many years.  I find that there are not many options for court accounting software.  Every program I used to use seems to have disappeared.  Does anyone have a program they use for the preparation of court accountings?

I use the Trust Accountant from Delta Data, Inc.  It was a little cumberson at first to use, but after using it for almost 9 months now I like it.

I use excel spreadsheets myself. The AICPA developed a system/program for the accountings. It's free if you're an AICPA Tax Division member and you can get a free copy if you attend the CalCPA Estate Planning Conference next month.

PPC has a book and CDs for trust accountings that my firm recently purchased but I haven't seen.

The Actec website has a list of software products for accountings also.

Fasttax has FAS (Fiduciary Accounting System). I have two massive accountings (400 to 500 pages each) that I do every other year. I've been using FAS, although I can't give it the highest recommendation.

Good:

1. It does a great job of tracking your investment inventory. I get managed accounts where there will be multiple purchases and sales for a given stock. It tracks and calculates basis perfectly.

2. Input is relatively easy. Your goal is to stay in balance as you go.

Bad:

1. It doesn't allow you to track rental properties and put the net income or net loss on a single schedule. Instead it just list the rental receipts under Receipts and the related rental expenses under Disbursements.

2. They have an outrageous pricing system on the software. If you want unlimited users and unlimited clients to put on the software, it will run you $10,000. Currently we pay an annual fee of $800 for a single user and no more than five clients on the system. This is very annoying.

3. I'm not real happy with the reports it puts out. There is an option to export to Excel, and you can change things around in Excel. I usually do this, but I usually have to do quite a bit of work in Excel.

We have founds that GEMS software from Gillette to be easier to use than the FAS software and we do quite a few accountings a year.
